Finally a forum devoted to Friesians! Does anyone have any tips on what can be done for a small white spot caused by a sore from a halter? My guy is 4 months old and was hospitalized for a week right after birth. The veterinary staff (can you believe that? ) left a halter on him to make it easier for them to administer medications thus causing a sore that of course, grew in white. He was definitely born pure black and this is clearly a halter mark. Any magical secret out there I'm not aware of? Any hope that his age could be my saving grace? Thanks! Any info is greatly appreciated!

If you are concerned about the keuring, you can have the vet certify that the white is from a healed wound.

I'm not worried about the keuring. I have a letter plus before and after pics. If there is some way that I'm not aware to facilitate black hair growth I'd love to hear it. I was hoping because he is still so young that some kind of preventative measure other than what I'm doing could be done. Thanks!

The hair may grow back in black next season, after the next winter coat is shed. My mare had saddle issues that caused white hairs on both sides of her back under the stirrup bars. The next shedding season the white was replaced by black hairs and they've been black ever since.
If they don't grow back in black on their own, I don't know of anything that will make a hair folicle that has permanently lost it's pigment to regain color.

That's actually what I am hoping for. I guess because the spot is on his face it bothers me more. Either way I love him to death. Thanks!

You could also dye the hair black with black hair dye or use special blackening shampoo with Henna in it. Im not sure if dying hair is allowed in Keurings or not-may want to look that up. But its safe for horses as far as I know, and theres many options to make the hair appear black until it grows in again, just for cosmetic reasons and to make him look better.
