Nylis tends to get sweet itch. Every summer I have to be careful and watchful to make sure he doesn't itch himself to pieces. Totally covering him for turnout, even a fly mask at night is necessary. I was hesitant to cover his face at night, but he was rubbing himself to sores and his eyes were getting to be a goopy mess from the bugs. He's so much better now. On his midline I spread some Desitin to protect him from bugs and sooth is skin, it's cheap, available and works great. I spread on his sheath too. If I don't do this he'll swell up and bite himself to where he wounds himself. But the Desitin keeps him comfortable and healthy.
I recently found a new soap to use on his itchy places. He even breaks out in hives sometimes. I've used the soap and it really seems to help. It has aloe, olive oils, sulphur, zinc, magnesium and other good skin things. This is the soap:

Then after he's dry from washing with the soap, I sprinkle Gold Bond foot powder into his hair and down to the skin. It dries out the hives bumps great and helps against itchiness. It's not so great to spread white powder on the croup area of a black horse, but it makes him feel better and it clears up the problem!
The other great thing I've found is the Vetericyn spray. This stuff is magic. He started to have a bit of scratches last winter. I shaved the hair from his heels and sprayed the vetericyn every day. Plus the Gold Bond powder. The scabs completely healed and the problem hasn't come back. I use it on any skin scrape or scratch or rub spot. I've seen this at any number of tack shops and SmartPak and Dover carry it.
