I've tried several things over the past 7 years, and to be honest they have had little to no effect. Some products do work better than other,s but I think the true black or blue black is in the genes. None of my guys has been on any blacking supplements for the past 3 years. My two mares are jet black and bake themselves in the sun, no red tint to the mane. One mare had black dapples! My gelding bays out , even when he was on supplements. I have used a Henna shampoo which works nicely, but again, it only lasts so long and I tend to use it before a show. I guess it is a pitfall of owning a black horse...no easy way to keep it jet black.

I am beginning to think you're right friesiansownme, some just must have it in there genes not to fade (true black, blue black). I have a non-friesian friend that lives in Holland and she doesn't understand why "ours here in the states fade out!" She says that she drives by friesians out in the pastures all the time and none of them are faded. I don't understand that!
What is the Henna shampoo that you use?

Hi, the henna shampoo that I've had to most success with is called Black Velvet, made by Hilton Herbs (a UK Co.) It is a bit pricey, but it works and you can get it through The Healing Barn, here in the states. They have an online store, selling all the Hilton Herbs.

MY friesian is very blue black but even she is starting the dapple with all the sun - I dont mind too much though - she will go back when the summer coat goes - the funny thing is her mane and tail dont bleach. I heard it can help to hose them down after every exercise to ensure no sweat on the hair as it makes the lightening worse.
